This year, for the first time in the series history, Japan used their national team Samurai Japan to represent them in the series. Some consider this series, especially for Japan, a tune-up for the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
The MLB All-Stars were not represented by most of the leagues true stars, but they did have many notbale names on the roster. Smaurai Japan ended up winning the series 3 games to 2 with outfielder Yuki Yanagita being named series MVP.
